Uganda’s cities are facing a mounting challenge: waste generation is projected to rise by 70% by 2050, yet current systems already struggle, with only 40% of waste collected in Kampala and widespread open dumping and burning threatening health, the environment, and economic growth.
This challenge calls for bold solutions to reduce municipal waste through efficient collection, recycling and resource recovery, plastic reduction, and digital innovation. Proposals must demonstrate tangible benefits for women, youth, and marginalized groups, while integrating informal sector actors and driving behavioral change.
Eligible applicants include women’s groups, youth‑led organizations, NGOs, cooperatives, CBOs, academic institutions, and private companies with prototype or pilot‑ready solutions. Activities must target one or more of seven pilot municipalities: Jinja, Mbale, Gulu, Arua, Hoima, Mbarara, or Kampala.
💡 Prize pool — USD 40,000, with up to four awards of USD 10,000 each. Winners retain a perpetual licence to use and commercialize their solutions, while UNDP holds IP rights.
