Water utilities are increasingly called to lead on climate action. This project aims to map carbon flows across drinking water, stormwater, wastewater, and advanced treatment systems, identifying emissions, residuals, and biogas while highlighting opportunities for recovery, capture, conversion, storage, and avoidance.
The research will evaluate value creation pathways — from products and avoided costs to environmental attributes — and explore the partnerships needed to implement them. By analyzing how opportunities vary across system types and local contexts, the project will provide practical insights for utilities and assess implications for greenhouse gas accounting and environmental claims.
Eligible applicants include universities, research organizations, agencies, consultants, and for‑profit entities worldwide, provided they meet WRF’s timeliness requirements.
💡 Grants available up to USD 300,000 for 24‑month projects on carbon flows and recovery in water systems.
