The ERC Starting Grant is designed to help outstanding early‑career researchers establish their own independent teams and programs. It supports Principal Investigators who have already demonstrated research independence — for example, by publishing significant work as lead author without their PhD supervisor.
Eligible applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) defended between 1 January 2017 and 31 December 2026, ensuring the scheme targets those at the critical stage of building independence. Researchers of any age or nationality may apply, provided they intend to conduct their work at a host institution in an EU Member State or Associated Country.
Funding includes up to EUR 1.5 million for projects lasting up to 60 months, with additional support available for major equipment, facilities, or relocation. Awardees must dedicate at least 50% of their working time to the ERC project and spend at least 50% of their time in the EU or Associated Country.
💡 Each researcher may receive only one ERC Starting Grant in their career, making this a unique opportunity to launch a long‑term research trajectory.
